Diablo 4 Gold Economy: Why Prices Crash at Season Start (and When to Buy)

Every Diablo 4 season resets the economy โ and with it, the price of gold, boss materials and top-tier gear. If you've ever bought gold in week one and watched the same amount cost half as much a month later, you've felt the seasonal cycle. Here's how it works and how to use it.

The week-one demand spike
At season launch, everyone needs everything at once: respec costs, enchanting rolls, masterworking materials and gems all drain gold fast, while supply is at its lowest because sellers haven't farmed stock yet. The result is the most expensive gold of the entire season during the first one to two weeks.
Items follow the same curve but harder. The first well-rolled mythic uniques and greater-affix pieces to hit the market command enormous premiums from players racing the leaderboards. If you're not competing for world-first pushes, week one is the worst time to buy gear.
Mid-season: the buyer's window
Three to five weeks in, seller stock is deep, competition between sellers pushes prices down, and casual demand tapers off. Gold routinely costs 40โ60% less than launch-week rates, and mid-tier mythics become genuinely cheap as pushers replace them with perfect rolls.
This is the window where buying makes the most sense for the average player: your character still has most of the season left to enjoy the gear, but you're paying off-peak prices.
Season end: deep discounts, short runway
In the final weeks, prices collapse โ seasonal gold and items stop mattering once the realm merges into Eternal. Sellers dump stock at clearance rates. If you mainly play Eternal realm, remember that seasonal purchases don't transfer as-is; buy on the realm where you actually play.
One caution: delivery can slow near season end as sellers wind down operations. Stick to sellers showing recent completed orders and realistic delivery estimates.
Practical timing rules
Buy gold when you hit the endgame wall (usually mid-season), not on day one. Buy items after the first balance patch of the season, when build metas settle and mispriced gear floods the market. And always compare several sellers on the marketplace before ordering โ the spread between the cheapest and average listing is often 20% or more.
