Account buying has matured into a structured market with escrow, warranties and seller ratings — but the difference between a safe purchase and a horror story still comes down to a handful of checks. This is the complete checklist we'd use ourselves.
Before you buy: the four non-negotiables
First, full email access. The listing must include the original email account or a mail-changeable setup. Without it, the previous owner can recover the account at any time — no exceptions to this rule.
Second, escrow checkout: buy only through a marketplace that holds your payment until you confirm delivery. Third, seller history: look for hundreds of completed orders and a 95%+ rating, not just a good price. Fourth, a written warranty: reputable sellers guarantee against reclaims — lifetime warranty listings are worth the small premium on expensive accounts.
Reading the listing like a pro
Match the account's region/server to where you play — transfers are slow, paid, or impossible depending on the game. Check ban status explicitly (VAC status for Steam games, server bans for Minecraft). For ranked games, distinguish handleveled accounts (normal game history, cleaner MMR, safer) from botted ones (cheap, higher flag risk).
Screenshots should match the description. If a skin list, rank badge or hour count in the description doesn't appear in the screenshots, ask the seller to verify before paying — marketplace chat keeps a record that supports any later dispute.
The first 10 minutes after delivery
Log in immediately and change the password. Replace the linked email with your own, then enable two-factor authentication on both the game account and the new email. Remove any linked phone numbers, recovery emails or connected third-party logins you don't recognize.
Only after securing everything should you confirm delivery on the marketplace — that's what releases payment to the seller. If anything is wrong (wrong region, missing skins, ban you weren't told about), open a dispute instead of confirming.
Red flags that should end the deal
Any request to complete payment outside the marketplace. Any seller who won't provide full email access on a high-value account. Prices dramatically below every other listing for the same spec — stolen or recoverable accounts are usually priced to move fast. And urgency pressure: legitimate sellers with real stock don't need you to decide in the next five minutes.
